Overview

Tell us your thoughts on Peckham

We want the views of the people who live, work in and visit Peckham on:

  • the buildings, spaces and places
  • what works well in the design of the areas and what doesn’t.

The survey will help us make decisions about the area about what we should protect, and what we should try to change.

Click on the link at the bottom of the page to choose an area on the map and complete a short survey.

We look forward to hearing from you by the closing date of 15 March 2024. Please also feel free to share the survey with other people in Peckham.

What is an area character study?

An area character study looks at the physical and socio-economic data of a defined area. It looks at the experience of those that live, work and visit that area. It looks at how the area has changed over time and how it might change in the future. This initial assessment is used to identify areas with a consistent character. These are called character areas. They vary in size. Sometimes they will be the size of a few streets. Sometimes an entire neighbourhood may have a consistent character.

These character areas are explored in more detail. This includes looking at the buildings in the area and the spaces between the buildings. The study looks at positive aspects of the area’s character. It also looks at opportunities for improvement.

What is the Peckham area character study?

We have prepared a draft area character study for Peckham. The purpose of the study is to look at the different character areas within Peckham.

You can view the draft study via the link below:

DRAFT Peckham Area Character Study

The study has identified 15 distinct character areas. There are 4 town-centre areas, 1 industrial / creative area and 11 residential areas.

We are now asking the people who live, work or visit Peckham about their thoughts. We want to know what local people like about their neighbourhood. We also want to know about anything that they would like to be different. These views will inform the priorities and guidance for any future changes in the area.

How do you use area character studies?

Area character studies are 'evidence base' documents. These are documents that inform future planning policies and supplementary planning documents (SPD). They make sure future change is appropriate to the character of an area. They communicate the desires of local people.

Why your views matter

It is important that changes respond to the character of an area and the desires of local people. We want the Peckham Area Character Study to represent the views of those who live, work in and visit Peckham. We want to know what you like about your neighbourhood and about anything that you would like to be different. These views will inform the priorities and guidance for any future changes in the area.

What happens next

We will review everyone’s responses. We will update the Peckham Area Character Study to reflect these responses. We will also create detailed summaries for each Character Area. These will inform the strategic priorities for the area. They will act as guidance on future policy and development management.
