Traffic measures at junction of Wild's Rents and Long Lane

Closed 14 May 2023

Opened 24 Apr 2023

Overview

Tell us what you think about proposals to close a section of Wild's Rents to motor vehicles, and introduce a raised zebra crossing on Long Lane.

Local people have told us that they find it difficult to cross Long Lane at this location. We have also observed many vehicles misusing the one-way system in Wild’s Rents, making it unsafe for all road users.

We are proposing to raise a 20m section of Wild’s Rents and pave it with footway materials, closing it to motor traffic. This provides a good place for a raised zebra crossing on Long Lane, and seating space in Wild’s Rents. This will help reduce speeds on Long Lane, where we have received reports of speeding, and make crossing easier for pedestrians.

We also plan to use some of the extra pavement space for cycle racks and planting three new trees to compensate for the loss of a sapling on Long Lane.  This scheme will enhance the look of the space as well as support more cycling and walking in the neighbourhood.

Please share this link with your friends, family and contacts – the more people we hear from, the better informed our decisions will be. In particular, we often don’t hear from as many people in our Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities as we need to, which means it is harder to fairly represent the whole of Southwark. Help us to do better.
