John Keats Primary School Street

Overview

Tell us what you think about plans for a camera-controlled 'School Street' on Verney Road.

We have worked with John Keats Primary School to develop plans for a 'School Street' on Verney Road, between the junctions with Verney Way and St James's Road. Using Automatic Number-Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras, motor vehicles would be banned from travelling through this section of road during school opening and closing hours (up to an hour each morning and afternoon). There would be exemptions for:-

  • emergency services
  • residents within the scheme area will be able to apply for a free permit
  • registered carers of residents within the scheme, and blue badge holders working at or dropping people off at the school will be able to apply for a permit
  • Southwark school transport vehicles (school transport vehicles from elsewhere will be able to apply for a permit)

Trials of 'School Street' closures across Southwark have been very well received by schools and parents, contributing greatly to children's safety, improving air quality outside schools, and making it easier for children to get to school by walking or cycling. We are keen to hear from residents in the vicinity of John Keats Primary School about how this scheme should work and any concerns you may have.

Why your views matter

We want to make sure the scheme we implement is the best fit possible for local residents, as well as for children who attend John Keats Primary School, their parents and carers.

Following this consultation, and subject to sign-off by the Cabinet Member, we would expect any scheme to be implemented in early-mid 2024.
