Bird in Bush Road School Street Proposal

Closed 16 Apr 2023

Opened 23 Mar 2023

Overview

Tell us what you think about plans for a proposed 'School Street' on Bird in Bush Road.

We have worked with Camelot Primary School to develop plans that will improve safety for pupils travelling to school and remove traffic cutting through on this road.

The proposal includes the use of physical barriers - such as bollards - to prohibit motor vehicles at all times between the junction with Green Hundred Way/Naylor Road and close to Commercial Way. Emergency services, school vehicles/deliveries and cycles will still have access.

As access is required for Peterchurch House and other properties, we are proposing that the eastern section of Bird in Bush Road will have a timed, camera-controlled no-entry instead (see plan below).

The cameras will only be in operation from 8am to 9am and then again between 15.00 and 16.00, (exact times to be confirmed). There would be exemptions for:-

  • emergency services
  • residents within the scheme area will be able to apply for a free permit
  • registered carers of residents within the scheme, and blue badge holders working at or dropping people off at the school will be able to apply for a permit
  • Southwark school transport vehicles (school transport vehicles from elsewhere will be able to apply for a permit)

Trials of 'School Street' closures across Southwark have been very well received by schools and parents, contributing greatly to children's safety, improving air quality outside schools, and making it easier for children to get to school by walking or cycling.

We are keen to hear from residents of Bird in Bush road, as well as from parents and teachers at Camelot primary School, about how this scheme should work and any concerns you may have.

Please share this link with your friends, family and contacts – the more people we hear from, the better informed our decisions will be. In particular, we often don’t hear from as many people in our Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities as we need to, which means it is harder to fairly represent the whole of Southwark. Help us to do better.
