Southwark tree policy review: shape how we manage trees

Overview

We are keen to involve people in shaping our draft plan proposals that sets out how we manage, protect and promote the benefits of trees in our borough.

We manage 82,000 trees: 16,000 are on our streets; 44,000 are park trees; 17,000 are on housing estates; 5,000 are located in school grounds and 54 hectares of woodland, including 64 local Sites of Importance for Nature Conservation. We also manage about 38,000 trees in private ownership. Many of these trees have legal protection.

Our long term draft plan proposals will:

• manage our trees
• protect trees from being removed unnecessarily
• protect our trees through legal means
• recognise the value the contribution trees make to air quality
• promote the value of trees, among our residents, businesses and developers
