Outdoor events policy review: shape how we manage events

Closed 3 May 2019

Opened 11 Mar 2019

Overview

Outdoor events form an important part of Southwark Council's cultural strategy. The strategy outlines our commitment to  support the long term ambition of Southwark being the first choice for people to live, work, study and visit.  In delivering the strategy, we manage over 160 outdoor events each year in our parks, squares, walkways and streets.

We:

  • process applications
  • advise event organisers
  • scrutinise plans
  • consult with local stakeholders and partner agencies; and
  • monitor events as they take place

Our outdoor events policy plays an important role in setting out the way we run events role and work with people.

We also fund an annual programme of free community events contributing to a vibrant Southwark. Such as:

  • Camberwell Fair
  • Bermondsey Carnival
  • East Dulwich Christmas Cracker,
  • Peckham and Nunhead Free Film Festival and the
  • annual firework display

After reduced funding from central government, we face challenges with continued investment with our events programme.  Last year, the council allowed two major commercial events to take place. The income generated from these events allowed for the continued support of our annual free events.

Why your views matter

We would like you to help us shape how we manage our events programmes, to make sure they are fit for purpose.

Whether you live, work or visit the borough, you are invited to complete this survey.

Please spare a few minutes to give us your views by the closing date, 3 May 2019.

What happens next

Over the next few months the Outdoor events policy will be reviewed and refreshed using all the comments and feedback we have gathered. Further engagement may take place with park user groups when looking at specific spaces or location aspects of the policy.

We will give feedback on this website and at a public meeting in the summer 2019.  Please don't forget to leave your contact details with us, so we can keep in touch.

Thank you.
