The council is consulting on our preferred location for a new leisure centre for Rotherhithe and Bermondsey, which will replace Seven Islands. Our preference is to include the facility within the new town centre at Canada Water that will be delivered by British Land; on what is known as plot 6.
The new centre will include:
Why are we consulting?
The council would like to have your view on the best location for the new leisure centre. The consultation boards attached below explain why plot 6 is our choice, but we want to understand if you support this, or if you prefer another option.
How to get involved
There are a number of ways you can find out more and have your say: on-line; at a series of public events; or, by visiting Seven Islands.
On-line
The council is working in partnership with British Land on a project to create a new town centre at Canada Water, where we would like to locate the new leisure centre. If you follow the link below to British Land’s website for the Canada Water project you will learn more about their plan and see where plot 6 fits into the overall vision.
If you would like information on why the council thinks plot 6 is the right place for the new centre please read the council report below.
Once you have read this information you can complete a questionnaire and give us your feedback. This online questionnaire will remain open until 29th of April 2016.
Public events
Listed in the events section are a number of public events we are running in conjunction with British Land. Their project team will be there to explain their development masterplan, which shows the location of plot 6 and how it fits into the new town centre.
Council officers will also be in attendance with information on the options we considered for the site of the new leisure centre and to explain why plot 6 is our choice.
At Seven Islands
Running at Seven Island until Friday 29th February you will find information on the site options considered by the council. You will also be able to complete the feedback questionnaire to give us your views and leave it at the centre, or simply post it to the Council using the postage address on the form.
Project Update: Canada Water leisure centre site decision date
A final cabinet decision on whether to proceed with the preferred site will now take place late September at the earliest, due to the Surrey Docks by-election. The report will be publically available and resident will be able to make representations to the cabinet if they wish and these will be considered before a decision is taken. The report will include details of the consultation responses which have been received by the council in response to the consultation.
We will also hold meetings with interested local groups and residents during this period if requested. All the feedback from these events will be considered before cabinet makes it’s final decision on whether to proceed with the preferred site in the second half of 2016.
If the cabinet determines to proceed with the preferred site there will then be further consultation on the proposals, including design as part of the on going British Land Masterplan consultation, which will continue in the period leading up to the submission of a planning application 2017.
