Vestry Road Consultation

Results updated 24 Sep 2021

We are pleased to inform you that we have received planning permission for the proposed development at Vestry Road.

This development will provide:

  • 11 new homes above a new and improved TRA hall for the community.
  • A landscaped courtyard area and playground for estate residents behind the new hall.
  • A wider, more open and inviting pathway into the estate, replacing the existing covered walkway.

In line with our local lettings policy, the new homes will be allocated as follows:

  • At least 50% of the new council homes will be offered to existing tenants who are in housing need on the Lettsom Estate or the local area, so they can continue to live near family, friends, and the services they currently use.
  • The remaining homes will be allocated to people on our wider housing waiting list.

Procurement

The next step is to appoint a building contractor to deliver the development.  Subject to appointment, we are working to start on site by March 2022.

We will notify residents when the contractor has been appointed and the date of “meet the contractor” event.

Please see attached newsletter for further information.

Overview

Southwark council has made a historic commitment to deliver 11,000 new homes in Southwark by 2043. The aim of this engagement is to support the delivery of the 11,000 new council homes within the borough. We have over 600 new homes completed or nearing completion in the new homes programme across the borough and have been working with residents to identify sites where we could build new homes. 50 per cent of the new council homes will be let to local residents in housing need.

One of the sites where we are proposing to build new homes is the site of the Lettsom TRA Hall. We are suggesting that we replace the existing hall with a new TRA hall, built to modern standards with new council homes provided above the hall. Our vision for the new hall is a space that is safe, welcoming and can be used by everyone who lives locally; a place that the community can use for activities, celebrations and managed by and for the local TRA.

We want to make sure that local residents have a say in what is being built in there neighbourhood, the design and its community space. How the community hall can bring communities together and also keep local residents in the local area.

The scheme will be of mixed sized properties, related to the needs of the area.
