11,000 New Council homes - Balman House

Closed 31 Aug 2020

Opened 19 Jun 2020

London is facing a housing crisis and as part of this Southwark is also experiencing extreme housing shortages. That is why we are committed to building 11,000 new council homes across the borough by 2043, and 2,500 of these by 2022. It’s a big target, but it’s crucial that we try and achieve it, if we’re going make sure our residents have quality homes, they can be proud of.

We are consistently looking at new and innovative ways to provide new council homes for local residents. One way we’re seeking to do this is by looking at building new homes on top of our existing council blocks. The benefits of this include:

  • More new suitable homes to existing local residents in housing need.
  • Provides important services to our existing blocks where required; like new lifts, roofs, improved block insulation and better fire safety measures.
  • Improvements to shared spaces and the surrounding area.
  • Better value for tenants and leaseholders, as we will complete important block works at the same time as we build these new homes, the cost of which will not be recharged.
  • Less disruptive to residents because significant parts of the build are undertaken off site.
  • Higher quality homes, as developing flats off-site, in an indoor environment means they don’t have to be built through difficult weather conditions.

COVID 19 - The current advise is to social distance and not gather in groups, both affect our normal consultation arrangements. During this period a lot of our consultations and communication will be using safe ways to contact you through emails, telephone calls and text messaging, with newletters to keep you updated. Please give us your contact details to ensure that we can contact you. We will resume meetings when the government advises that it is safe to do so.

Throughout the design and development of any new Council homes, we'll make sure you're involved in the most important decisions, and that there are plenty of opportunities for you to have your say. This could be through TRA's (where they exist), individually, or through drop-in meetings and events. We'll also keep you updated through newsletters, on our website, and we'll aim to have meetings at times that work for everyone.
