Thurland Road Improvement Scheme

Closed 24 Mar 2017

Opened 17 Feb 2017

Overview

Southwark Council has received a number of requests from the public to address safety concerns in Old Jamaica Road and Thurland Road. We are now looking to improve the safety in Old Jamaica Road and Thurland Road, particularly the main pedestrian route to and from the school and the main route towards Bermondsey underground station. Changes proposed are aimed at enhancing Old Jamaica Road and Thurland Road, reducing traffic flows and traffic speeds in order to improve the safety of all road users.

We are seeking your views on the following two options:

  • Option 1 – Make Thurland Road and Old Jamaica Road one-way northbound (Dockley Road to Marine Street)
  • Option 2 – Close Thurland Road to all traffic between Spa Road and Dockley Road

For each of these two options we are proposing a range of ways to improve road safety for users.

We want your views

We would be grateful if you could take the time to review the proposals outlined here and provide a response to the questionnaire by Friday 24 March 2017. Your views are essential for us to understand your requirements. They form a fundamental part of the scheme development process and inform our decision making for the final design before construction works start on site.

Drop in ‘Q&A’ Session

A drop in session will be held at the St James Church in Thurland Road on Thursday 16 March 2017 from 3pm to 7pm.

This will provide an opportunity for local residents and stakeholders to view the plans and to talk to council officers. We will be available to discuss the proposed changes in detail and provide answers to particular points of detail that are not covered here.

What happens next

The responses to the questionnaire will be analysed and taken into account in the final design of the proposed works.

As you can appreciate Southwark Council receives many comments from consultations and we are therefore unable to respond personally to specific issues raised. All comments and suggestions are taken into consideration before a decision is made.

Should you require any further information regarding the proposed scheme please contact Mandalina Stricevic at mandalina.stricevic@southwark.gov.uk.
