Spa Road Improvement Scheme
Overview
Southwark Council is holding a consultation exercise to ask you what you think about proposals to improve the appearance of Spa Road.
Background
Spa Road was a home to a major regeneration scheme that has recently been completed. Southwark Council is looking to improve the appearance of Spa Road, particularly the main pedestrian route from Grange Road to Neckinger. We want to enhance the appearance of Spa Road, widen the footway to improve accessibility for all users, and create better growing conditions for existing trees.
Funding
The Spa Road Scheme is being funded from contributions made by development sites at 19, 126 and 150 Spa road and from the site bounded by Grange Walk, Grange Yard and the Grange.
We are proposing to:
• Install raised tables at the junctions with Grange Road and Alscot Road to reduce vehicle speeds, shorten pedestrian crossing distance and improve road safety for all users.
• Install inset parking bays to provide more protection for parked vehicles.
• Widen the north footway along Spa Road between its junction with Grange Road and Neckinger to improve accessibility for all users of the footway. This footway is currently impassable in places as the existing trees have grown and taken up most of the usable footway. Widening of the footway on the north side results in net reduction of 28 resident and pay and display parking bays. These are underused and there is a spare capacity in Spa Road and nearby roads for residents and visitors to park.
• Enhance tree pits for existing tress to provide better growing conditions for the trees.
• Provide dedicated disabled bays to cater for needs of residents and local businesses.
• Reduce the width of the existing road to 5.0m to facilitate the widened footways which is an acceptable road width for two-way roads.
We want your views
We would be grateful if you could take the time to review the proposals outlined here and provide a response to the questionnaire by Friday 24 February 2017. Your views are essential for us to understand your requirements. They form a fundamental part of the scheme development process and inform our decision making for the final design before construction works start on site.
What happens next?
The responses to the questionnaire will be analysed and taken into account in the final design of the proposed works.
As you can appreciate Southwark Council receives many comments from consultations and we are therefore unable to respond personally to specific issues raised. All comments and suggestions are taken into consideration before a decision is made.
Should you require any further information regarding the proposed scheme please contact Mandalina Stricevic at mandalina.stricevic@southwark.gov.uk.
Drop in ‘Q&A’ Session
A drop in session will be held on Saturday 4 February 2017 from 10am to 1pm. A gazebo for the drop in session will be erected at the junction of Spa Road and Grange Road.
This will provide an opportunity for local residents and stakeholders to view the plans and to talk to council officers. We will be available to discuss the proposed changes in detail and provide answers to particular points of detail that are not covered here.
