Sumner Street

Overview

We are improving walking and cycling facilities on Sumner Street including the junction with Southwark Street. These changes will:

• Provide a more pleasant environment for people visiting Tate Modern and local businesses;
• Improve cycle facilities and the connection to Cycle Superhighway 7; and 
• Create a healthier, safer street in line with the Healthy Streets approach.

Our Proposals:

The key measures proposed in Sumner Street are:

• Traffic calming: Two raised crossings (by Emerson Street and by Great Guildford Street) and sinusoidal hump on the approach to Sumner Street in Great Guildford Street;
• Improved cycling comfort at the entrance to the shared use footway/cycleway behind the Tate Modern;
• Physically segregated cycle lane for cyclists entering Sumner Street from Southwark Street, and a right turn pocket by Holland Street. Paid parking bays relocated;
• Early release for cyclists at the Southwark Street junction in Sumner Street and in Great Suffolk Street;
• Two stage right turns to allow people to access the network from Southwark Street including a reconfigured island;
• Yellow box junction in Southwark Street; and
• Banned left turn for heavy good vehicles from Southwark Street into Great Suffolk Street to protect vulnerable road users.

Other Work in the Area:

 We are working closely with other schemes in the area including:

• The access into Sumner Street from CS7 (Southwark Bridge Road) is currently being designed separately as part of Cycle Superhighway improvements;
• There is a new development currently under construction at 185 Park Street which includes residential units, and the area includes the Business Improvement District (BID) Better Bankside; and
• The southern section of the route (Great Suffolk Street to Southwark Bridge Road) is currently still being designed and will be consulted on at a later date.

Next Steps

Following this consultation we will analyse the responses and review the designs accordingly. The design would then be subject to decision making by the cabinet member and statutory consultation prior to implementation.
