Kingswood Estate School Street Proposals

Closed 12 Mar 2023

Opened 8 Feb 2023

Overview

Tell us what you think about plans for a camera-controlled 'School Street' on the Kingswood Estate.

We have held initial discussions with the schools around Bowen Drive to develop plans for a 'School Street' on the Kingswood Estate. Using Automatic Number-Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras, motor vehicles would be banned from travelling through this section of road during school opening and closing hours (up to an hour each morning and afternoon). There would be exemptions for:-

  • emergency services
  • residents within the scheme area will be able to apply for a free permit
  • registered carers of residents within the scheme, and blue badge holders working at or dropping people off at the school will be able to apply for a permit
  • Southwark school transport vehicles (school transport vehicles from elsewhere will be able to apply for a permit)

We have developed two initial proposals:-

Option 1 provides protection to the area directly outside Dulwich Wood Primary School, but allows vehicles to access the rest of the estate as normal.

Option 2 would provide safer routes for children at school opening and closing hours for the whole of the Kingswood Estate, by preventing access by motor vehicle to the whole estate except for permit holders.

Option 2

Plan of Option 2 proposal with timed closure for the whole estate

Trials of 'School Street' closures across Southwark have been very well received by schools and parents, contributing greatly to children's safety, improving air quality outside schools, and making it easier for children to get to school by walking or cycling. We are keen to hear from residents of the Kingswood Estate, as well as from parents and teachers at Dulwich Wood Primary School, Dulwich Wood Nursery, Kingsdale Foundation School and Dulwich Prep London, about how this scheme should work and any concerns you may have.
