John Donne Primary School Street

Closed 20 Mar 2022

Opened 21 Feb 2022

Overview

Tell us what you think about plans for a camera-controlled 'School Street' around John Donne Primary School.

We have worked with John Donne Primary School to develop plans for a 'School Street' on Wood's Road, Colmore Mews and Burchell Road (see plan below). Using Automatic Number-Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras, motor vehicles would be banned from travelling through this section of road during school opening and closing hours (up to an hour each morning and afternoon).

There would be exemptions for:-

  • emergency services
  • residents within the scheme area will be able to apply for a permit
  • registered carers of residents within the scheme, and blue badge holders working at or dropping people off at the school will be able to apply for a permit
  • Southwark school transport vehicles (school transport vehicles from elsewhere will be able to apply for a permit)

Trials of 'School Street' closures across Southwark have been very well received by schools and parents, contributing greatly to children's safety, improving air quality at school locations, and making it easier for children to travel to school by walking or cycling.

We are keen to hear from residents of Wood's Road, Colmore Mews and Burchell Road, as well as from parents and teachers at John Donne Primary School, about how this scheme should work and any concerns you may have.

Why your views matter

We want to make sure the scheme we implement is the best fit possible for local residents, as well as for children who attend John Donne Primary School, their parents and carers.

Following this consultation, and subject to sign-off by the Cabinet Member, we would expect any scheme to be implemented in autumn 2022.
