Bermondsey to Peckham Quietway

Closed 19 Mar 2018

Opened 19 Feb 2018

Overview

Quietways are part of a London-wide programme to implement a network of continuous and convenient cycle routes on less-busy streets across London. The routes are clearly marked to help cyclists find their way along roads they may never have cycled along before. Quietways are ideal for less confident cyclists who want to cycle on lower-traffic streets, especially if they are new to cycling in London.

We design our Quietways in accordance with Healthy Street principles, intended to make our roads healthier and safer for all road users, especially pedestrians.

This Quietway is planned to run from Bermondsey down to Peckham Road, running along Glengall Road, Trafalgar Avenue and Sumner Road. We hope it will provide a safe alternative cycling route to the Surrey Canal Path, as we know this can sometimes become crowded with pedestrians and cyclists.

Changes along the proposed new Quietway include:

  • widening the east-west section of the Surrey Linear Canal Path into a shared path
  • installing a new two-way cycle path along Trafalgar Avenue
  • changes to the junction of Sumner Road and Commercial Way
  • new pedestrian and cycle crossings
  • new raised tables and raised junctions
  • improving or replacing many of the existing speed humps
  • double yellow lines at some junctions to improve visibility and pedestrian accessibility.

This section of the Quietway ends at Peckham Road, where we are working with TfL to deliver improved crossing facilities to ensure cyclists can safely continue their journey.

Why your views matter

It is a priority to make cycling and walking in Southwark easier and safer. However, we want to make sure we are making the right changes to achieve this. We welcome your feedback, which will help us shape the detailed plans for these street improvements.

What happens next

We will consider all views received when developing the final plans. The outcome of this consultation will be presented at a future community council meeting.

The final decision will be the Cabinet Member, subject to formal consultation.
