Overview

This is your opportunity to give your views on the traffic filter on Bermondsey Street plus the other complementary measures implemented in 2020. We want to hear from everyone who has an interest in how the streets in this area are used, including those who have already responded to our Commonplace page.

Since 2020, we have been monitoring the amount of traffic around Bermondsey Street. The final data will be presented to the Cabinet Member to inform the final decision on whether to keep, remove or amend the scheme.  

Streets for people

This scheme has the following aim:

  • Make more space on our pavements for social distancing to help keep everyone safe from COVID-19.
  • Improve road safety.
  • Help tackle the climate emergency
  • Make walking and cycling enjoyable, safe and easy ways of getting around.
  • Reduce inequalities in health and wellbeing 
  • Reduce the amount of cut-through traffic
  • Encourage people to shop local to help businesses and reduce car use.
  • Create a greener and healthier environment by improving air quality and reducing pollution and noise levels.

What was introduced

  • A traffic filter in between White's Grounds and Morocco Street with no entry to motor vehicles. 
  • Waiting and loading restrictions introduced on Bermondsey Street to accommodate footway widening to aid social distancing.
  • Prohibition of vehicles longer than 10 metres from entering Bermondsey Street.
  • Introduction of a contra-flow south-eastbound cycle way between Crucifix Lane and White's Grounds. 
  • Relocation of parking bays 

Since we want to understand the views of residents from all demographics, we ask that you complete the questions about where you live and your background at the end of the survey. This information will only ever be used for monitoring. We will not publish any personal data.

There are also a number of online community meetings where you can meet with concil officers and discuss your experiences of the scheme:-

18th August 6pm - community meeting

4th September 10.30am - community meeting

Why your views matter

The results of this questionnaire, as well as the engagement events and your comments on our Commonplace page we are carrying out this summer, will be considered alongside monitoring data from the streets themselves to produce a report and a recommendation to either:

One: Make the scheme permanent
If the data and consultation feedback indicates that the trials are meeting our objectives, we will recommend making the current experimental traffic orders permanent.

Two: Make amendments to the existing scheme
If the data, consultation feedback and safety considerations indicate that changes can be made to improve a scheme then we will recommend making amendments.

Three: Remove all or part of the scheme
If the scheme is not achieving the benefits expected, we can remove all or part of the scheme (subject to safety considerations).

What happens next

We will:

  • Undertake public consultation between late-July and mid-September
  • Review consultation responses and data gathered between mid-September and October
  • Make recommendations for consideration by the council in mid-October
  • If changes are approved and measures are to be retained in some form, statutory consultation will take place on a Traffic Management Order prior to a final decision to implement any permanent changes being taken.
