We are proposing to enhance the appearance and improve accessibility along Balfour Street between Rodney Road and Munton Road, and its junction with Rodney Road to Balfour Street. We asked what you thought of the proposal and what changes should be made.
You said
We received 46 responses: 39% fully supported, 48% partially supported with changes and 13% did not support the proposal.
The main elements of the proposal respondents liked were: wider footways / pedestrian friendly, greener street / additional tree planting; proposed traffic calming / speed reduction measures, quality / general feel of the improvements to the street, and the reduction in car parking.
The main elements of the proposal respondents did not like were: General loss of car parking, impact of parking loss of Henshaw Street, changes to current CPZ – make a new CPZ 24hr / 7 days, general improvements to cycling, and the contraflow cycle lane.
We did
We have made some changes to the proposals to better address your concerns and suggestions, where possible, without compromising the overall intent of the design. Please refer to the Balfour Street Consultation Summary Report and the Balfour Street Amended Design for further details regarding the feedback we received and amendments we have made to the proposal. The amended proposal will now go to the Cabinet Member for Environment and Public Realm for decision and then, subject to approval, we will prepare a more detailed design in preparation for statutory consultation. Implementation is currently schedule for completion by mid-2018.

Overview
Southwark Council has plans to enhance the appearance and improve accessibility along Balfour Street between Rodney Road and Munton Road, and its junction with Rodney Road.
Due to the ongoing regeneration of the local area, we would like to enhance the appearance of Balfour Street and its junction with Rodney Road by widening the footway to improve access for all users, creating a safer environment for cyclists, upgrading the public realm and increasing tree provisions, and improving safety for all road users at the Rodney Road junction.
We are proposing to:
- Resurface the footway in high quality paving
- Provide new trees
- Improve conditions for existing street trees
- Install traffic calming measures on Balfour Street at its junctions with John Maurice Close, Henshaw Street, Chatham Street
- Transform the junction with Balfour Street and Rodney Road to reduce vehicle speeds, shorten pedestrian crossing distances and improve road safety for all users
- Install indented parking bays to provide more protection for parked vehicles
- Enhance street lighting
- Widen the footways to improve accessibility for all users. Widening of the footway results in net reduction of 27 resident parking bays. These are underused & there is sufficient spare capacity on surrounding roads for residents and visitors to park
