School exclusions and young people - have your say

Closed 1 Mar 2020

Opened 17 Dec 2019

Overview

Help us to identify how we can support you and other young people from being excluded from school, and from being moved off the school roll when it is not in your and other young people's best interests.

The decision to exclude young people is not taken lightly.  However, over the past two years, there has been an increase in the number of young people being excluded from school. Being excluded is rarely a good experience.  It disrupts young people's education and increases their risk of futher social exclusion.

We want every young person to have the best education possible, and the opportunity to remain in mainstream school, where possible.

Please only complete this survey if you have attended a school in Southwark over the last 4 years.  Another version of this survey for adult family members, parents and carers can be found at:       www.southwark.gov.uk/exclusionssurveyfamilies

This survey is being carried out by our Education and Business Scrutiny Commission.  They want to reduce exclusions by helping young people to stay in school. They think we can achieve this with better understanding of your and other young people's views of school exclusions.  This will help us to come up with proposals to reduce the need to exclude young people from school.

Our recommendations will be presented to the council's Cabinet of councillors, by spring 2020.  We look forward to giving you feedback, from what you have told us by May 2020.  Your views therefore matter and are important to us.

Please spare a few minutes to help us:

  • share your experiences
  • help us identify the issues that lead to school exclusions
  • to work out how we can better support and prevent young people from being excluded
  • help stop children and young people being moved off school rolls when it's not good for them

The closing date for giving us your views is 1 March 2020.
