School exclusions and family support - have your say

Closed 1 Mar 2020

Opened 17 Dec 2019

Overview

Help us to understand and find out how we can better support your child, to reduce the need for school exclusions and prevent pupils from being moved off the school roll or register when it is not in their best interests.

The decision to exclude children is not taken lightly.  However, over the past two years, there has been an increase in the number of children being excluded from school. Being excluded is rarely a good experience.  It disrupts a child's education and leaves them more at risk of futher social  exclusion.

We want every child to have the best education possible and the opportunity to remain in mainstream school, where possible.

Please only complete this survey if you are a parent, carer or family member.  We're keen to receive your experiences of your child being excluded, or moved off the school roll or register, over the past 4 years. Another version of this survey for young people to complete can be found at: www.southwark.gov.uk/exclusionssurveyyoungpeople

This survey is being carried out by our Education and Business Scrutiny Commission.  They want to reduce exclusions by helping young people to stay in school. They think we can achieve this with better understanding of young people and families' views of school exclusions.  This will help us to come up with proposals to reduce the need to exclude young people from school.

Our recommendations will be presented to the council's Cabinet of councillors, in spring 2020.  We look forward to giving you feedback, from what you have told us by May 2020.  Your views therefore matter and are important to us.

The closing date for giving us your views is 31 January 2020.

If you prefer to respond to this survey by speaking to someone please contact  Julie Timbrell on 020 7525 0514 or email: julie.timbrell@southwark.gov.uk.  She will be happy to put you in touch with a member of the Commission.
